What is a Mood Board?

Whether you’re designing a website, running a new campaign, directing a photoshoot, or simply trying to define your brands aesthetic mood boards are there to help you pave the way. According to Interior Style Hunter, a mood board is a visual tool that communicates our concepts and visual ideas. When making a mood board one should seek images, materials, and text that reflect the desired style or concept.

Mood boards should have a harmonized style in order to tell a story.. What message are you trying to tell your audience? Your mood board will help you set the tone for your project and help guide the way it’ll be executed. Depending on the project you’re working on you’ll want to keep in mind different aspects that’ll help you set the tone. Inspirational image such as lighting, color, font, location, and props

I’ve found mood boards most useful when working with other creators and trying to get a concept across to everyone. Including swatches of materials, textures, and colors palettes can help create the ‘mood’ you are aiming for. You want to be obvious about your idea with the images and phrases you’ve chosen.
