'Nice For What'
Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ video is a celebration of boss babes everywhere, especially babes of color. The video includes Insecure creator Issa Rae, actress Rashida Jones, model Jourdan Dunn, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, comedian Tiffany Haddish, actress Yara Shahidi. Actress Zoe Saldana, model-twins Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjärta, and Black Panther actress Letitia Wright were also among the babedom cast. Each frame of the video focused on boss babe after boss babe, each talented and beautiful in their own right.
Adding a marketing lense, this video perfectly highlights the importance of connections and networks. Swedish twin beauties, Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjärta, were relatively unknown until they got the call to be in Drake’s album art visuals for Views. Due to their popularity on Social Media, the twins went from Sweden to Canada and have managed to continue to be muses to Drake. The twins famously posted a photo with him captioned: "That time we got some Canadian dude drunk and had him get a tattoo of our name." Another notable boss babe in the video was Girls Trip breakout star, Tiffany Haddish. From ‘the hood to Hollywood’ as Haddish says, she grew up in foster care and found solace in comedy, especially at The Laugh Factory where she was mentored by Dane Cook and The Waynes Brothers. Her perseverance, comedic timing and social media presence have all garnered her a coveted space in the world of Hollywood.
Each female in the video represents a different story. Whether it's skin tone, age or career, each boss babe was chosen for a reason and pop culture is starting to see that black girl magic is key to the changing landscape of marketing. The takeaway here is to continue to using your connections and growing your network. You may be tired of promoting your brand and thinking no one is watching or paying attention to you but if you continue to persevere I guarantee you that one knock on the door will become ten...who knows Drake might be one of them!
