Tribe Feature | Topacio Marrero
Topacio Marrero is a first-generation Dominican American dedicated to community development, social justice, and mindful parenting. She shows her advocacy through writing articles, her soon-to-be published book, “Awakening Poetry”, and her nonprofit organization Parenting Village Hollywood501 ©. Throughout her various forms of advocacy, she keeps the constant theme of mindfulness; a quality she aims to teach and share as she goes through her life journey.
In Tapocio’s articles, she touches on a variety of topics. She touches on social justice and the support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Within this topic, she focuses on the dismantling of anti-blackness within the afro-latinx community. She praised the unification between the Dominican and Haitain community in support of the BLM movement, and also acknowledges the emergence of cultural identity awareness among afro-latinxs. She has been notarized by prolific new outlets such as HuffPost, Blavity, ChangeWire, and Medium for her exceptional work.
Tapacio also runs a nonprofit called Parenting Village Hollywood501, where she creates a space for parents in the Brawford County to vent and receive support from a group of individuals going through the same life experiences. The non-profit helps families with basic necessities like paying a bill, and providing educational tools for children. Tapacio’s one true goal is to share all she’s learned from her personal experiences in hopes that she can aid and help someone’s life one day.
Tapacio tells Flourish that when she first started her business, her biggest investment was also her biggest lesson. She shared that she was not passionate about the first business she invested in. But through that she had found her true passion, and it kept going up from there. She explains that tribe is a vital part of her business, “I keep those around me that are focused on their goals and not on what others are doing.” She welcomes others into her journey, and if they share the same passion and experiences, it would usually end up in a collaboration. She states that social media has helped her business tremendously by increasing her revenue.
Tapacio says that her “flourish” story is when she got her first check for doing what she loved, which is writing. “After a year of doing it for free, it felt like such a blessing! I was already doing what I loved, but once you start getting consistent contracts it takes you to the next level!”, she tells Flourish. She says her biggest self care tip for business women is to practice mindfulness, “Go outside, take walks, dance, do the things you love to do consistently. Be kind to yourself.”
Tapacio’s business has flourished, and she is making her way into the trendiest new outlets around the US, getting noticed by many. To learn more about Tapacio, check out her site and blog page, where you can find more of her recent publications.
