Many public relations agencies promise to get your businesses name out there, but we all know that’s not always enough. Just getting your name out there doesn’t necessarily matter-it’s about who is saying your name. Wilson Marshall PR knows that and is dedicated to making sure the right people are talking about your brand. We spoke with Kim Wilson Marshall, founder and director of Wilson Marshall PR about her experiences as a black female business owner and we loved what she had to say.

As a self-funded entrepreneur, Kim Wilson Marshall knew that she has the passion for connecting people and turned that passion into profit. Kim saved the money she was making at her non-profit job to open up her PR and communications business. Her first client? The very own non-profit that she previously worked for. From then on, Kim has engulfed herself into her business, while still managing to make sure her schedule is flexible enough to be there to raise her son. That, she told us, is the biggest pay off of running her own business.

When talking to our tribe, one of our favorite questions to ask them for is what their “flourish” moment is- some point of their entrepreneurial journey that they’re proud of. Kim had two specific flourish moments in her journey thus far that truly show how committed to her cause she is. The first flourish moment happened when she was working with her client NYC Children Theater. The theater put on a performance of A Band of Angels, a musical about a young African American girl connecting to her past through learning about the Fisk Jubilee singers of Fisk University- the first black university in the US. This performance was near and dear to Kim’s heart so when only two different publications that she reached out to covered it, she was deeply saddened. However, Kim took this opportunity as a lesson to pivot her outreach and motivate herself to expand her sources. Kim ended up receiving even more press and the theater ended up receiving their first award for Best Family Theater.

Aside from that incredible milestone in Wilson Marshall PR, Kim also has another bountiful flourish moment. In February 2020, Kim received an award for being a Cultural Trailblazer from Harlem Fashion Week. She felt honored to be recognized by her talented peers within her community, as well as being surrounded by an amazing group of black visionary women who are actively doing great things for society.

In addition to being an inspiring black woman in NYC, Kim has done an excellent job promoting black-owned businesses. Wilson Marshall has gotten the name out there extensively for their client Harlem Shake, promoting the restaurant on many different websites listing black-owned businesses in Harlem. Despite a full-on worldwide pandemic, Wilson Marshall has gone above and beyond by supporting their clients and spreading their name in the craziness that has been 2020.
